The Unicorn John Lowe Phase 4 feels like a proper modern tribute to a legend – classic Lowe DNA, but with a much more aggressive, contemporary grip layout.
In the hand, the first thing you notice is the front-loaded, bomb-style barrel. The dart starts with a long gold coated point featuring a subtle ridge to help it bite into the board, then flows into a conical nose with teardrop-style milling. That nose work is mostly visual, but you can feel it slightly under the front finger, adding just a touch of reference without being harsh.
Despite the short 38.1 mm barrel, the dart feels surprisingly stable. The combination of front-weight, short length and grippy mid/rear makes it very easy for a confident, committed throw – especially if you favour a “pushy” action. Max showed exactly that, banging in a 180 followed by a 140 and really making the most of that front-loaded design.
Gav, who doesn’t naturally get on with bomb-shaped darts, found them more of a mixed bag. He hit a nice ton and a Shanghai, but also drifted off into the 12s and wider segments – and mentioned having to “pick them up and then readjust” because of the short barrel + point grip combo. If you rely on a longer straight barrel to land your fingers in the exact same place every time, these will demand a bit more adaptation.
Overall, the Phase 4 feels like a proper premium player dart: bold gold finish, black grenade grip, John Lowe signature and machined aluminium stems to match. They’re not a casual beginner’s set – but if you’re a front or mid gripper who likes a short, punchy, front-weighted barrel with plenty of texture, these could be a bit special.
The Review
John Lowe Unicorn Darts
A short, front-weighted bomb-style John Lowe barrel with modern grenade grip and a stepped rear, the Unicorn John Lowe Phase 4 offers tonnes of control for front and mid grippers who like a positive push point and a dart that really bites into the board. They’re premium-priced, premium-feeling and reward a confident, committed throw – especially if you naturally favour shorter barrels.
