Red Dragon’s 50 Year Luke Humphries Player Box is one of those sets that feels special before you even see the darts. From the moment you opened it on camera you could see why you were “beaming from ear to ear” – this is very much a collector’s piece as much as it is a playable setup. The outer packaging mirrors Luke’s flight design with clean geometric lines and a black/grey/gold anniversary theme, all wrapped around a chunky magnetic presentation case that snaps shut with a really satisfying, premium feel.
Inside, the presentation is on another level. Lift off the branded foam lid and you’re greeted by a deep, dense EVA insert that holds everything perfectly in place: the darts in a special 50-year branded point holder, three long Cool Hand Luke stems, Luke’s matching flights, an additional set of black-and-gold 50-year flights, and a handsome metal plaque with the 50 logo and his signature. The underside of the lid carries a limited-edition sticker with your individual number (yours being 2,174), plus Luke’s autograph and name, which really hammers home the “collector” vibe.
The darts themselves are every bit as classy as the box. They’re a 90% tungsten, front-weighted torpedo-style barrel in black Onyx with 24-carat gold inlay, built around Luke’s trusted match setup. A black coated point runs into a small conical/bullnose front with a short section of square-cut ring grip. From there, the main grip zone features three deep gold-filled grooves and additional rings, giving a positive, tactile feel right where most players will naturally hold. Further back, a tapered section carries four narrower grooved rings – not as grippy as the front, but still offering a usable push point – before you reach the smooth rear with the etched 50 logo and Red Dragon branding. Finished with long Cool Hand Luke stems and anniversary flights, the overall look is properly “World Champion-grade.”
Crucially, this is the one review where you chose not to throw them. On video you both made it clear: these are going straight on the shelf as a showpiece. Max did handle the darts extensively and commented that the coating has a slightly brushed-metal feel rather than being slippery, and that the square-cut grooves give a solid, noticeable grip without feeling crazy-aggressive. He also noted that the balance felt really good in the hand and that, if someone did want to throw them, the shape and grip layout would suit front, mid and rear grippers. But the whole tone of the review is clear: this set is primarily about collecting and display, with any on-board use being a bonus rather than the main purpose.
In short, the Winmau Alex Spellman darts are a bold-looking, aggressively grippy parallel barrel that turned out to be far more playable than either of you expected – especially for Gav, who usually avoids this kind of shape.

This 50 Year Luke Humphries Player Box is one of those sets that you almost don’t want to throw because it looks so good in the case. The presentation – from the magnetic outer box and numbered lid sticker to the embossed plaque, bespoke flights and matching stems – makes it feel like a proper centrepiece for any darts collection. In the hand, the barrel has that classy front-weighted torpedo shape with square-cut grooves and a slightly textured coating, so there’s enough grip and balance there to make it very usable on the board if you ever decide to give it a go. But for both of you, this one is all about pride of place on the shelf: a beautiful, limited edition Cool Hand set that celebrates Red Dragon’s 50 years in the game and Luke’s rise to the very top.
