The Shot Gnarly Rippah darts are one of those sets that tell you exactly what they are about before you even pick them up.
In the hand, I think these come across as a genuine specialist grip dart rather than a general all-rounder. Max talked through the whole barrel in detail: a black coated point, then a tapered nose with lateral grooves, before those very aggressive toothed rings at the front. From there the dart moves into repeated sections of twin-ring and micro-tooth grip, with very deep cuts and sharp edges, before running into the rear taper where the grip becomes another mix of toothed sections and lateral grooves. That all lines up almost perfectly with Shot’s official wording about pillar rings, savage rings and V-cuts. This is clearly a dart built to bite hard into the fingers and give a huge amount of traction. The name really suits it.
On the board, these looked exactly as demanding as you would expect from that kind of barrel. Max said straight away that they were “shredding” his fingers and that he was going to have to loosen up a lot just to get them out cleanly. Even so, he still kept them straight enough and ended up with an eight-dart finish overall, which is a good result given how much he was having to adapt his grip. The bigger point here is that they still flew okay through the air despite all that grip. That is important, because some ultra-grippy barrels can end up feeling awkward or stuck in the hand. These sounded more like a dart that rewards a player who actively wants that heavy grip feedback.
There is a live price change worth noting. In the review, Max quoted these at £89.95, but the current Premier Darts listing now shows them at £99.95. That is definitely a premium price, but to be fair, you are getting a 90% tungsten Shot barrel with a huge amount of machining, titanium coating, and the usual New Zealand-made Shot design identity behind it. These are not budget darts, but they are also very obviously not trying to be.
