The Winmau Rashad Sweeting Candy Man darts are one of those sets that make an impression before you have even picked them up.
In the hand, I think these come across as a really expressive specialist dart rather than a plain all-rounder. In the review, Max talked through that gold-effect point, the tapered conical nose with micro ring grip, then the 45-degree spiral-style groove, followed by the wide blue main grip section with deep concave grooves, another angled groove section, and then that really attractive scallop in the middle-rear area. After that, the dart moves into a sharper razor-style rear grip on the back taper before the smooth tail into the shaft. It is the sort of barrel where almost every section gives you a different reference point, and that is exactly what makes it interesting. Red Dragon lists the grip type simply as scallop, but in practice there is clearly much more to it than that, with the scallop acting as the standout feature in a much more complex grip layout.
On the board, these looked like a dart that could suit a wide range of holding positions, provided you like a barrel with a lot of character. That was one of my main takeaways in the review. I said there were front, middle and rear grip options all over the dart, and that depending on the sort of grip you want, you can almost pick your section. That flexibility is a real strength here. Max was more drawn to the scallop and smooth push-point feel through the middle, while I liked the fact that the barrel didn’t feel boring or one-dimensional the way some straight parallel darts can.
Performance-wise, I actually really enjoyed them. In the highlights, I threw them very well and came away wanting to spend more time with them, because it felt like there were bigger scores in there. Max also had some really nice visits with them, even though he was clear that the dart probably was not perfectly suited to his normal preference. That feels like an important point: this is not a dart that tries to please everyone in the exact same way, but if the grip map and shape suit your hand, I can see why it could become a really enjoyable set to throw.
Grip-wise, Max gave them a 2 / 5, which might sound lower than you would expect from looking at the barrel, but his explanation makes sense. He was using the scallop, and for him that section was more about the push point than the raw grip itself. The rear razor-style section, on the other hand, was clearly much grippier and would probably suit a rear gripper wanting more power and control. The live Red Dragon page actually lists the grip level as 5 / 5, which really underlines how differently these can feel depending on where you hold them. From the rear, they are clearly aggressive. From the scallop, they are much more about shape and reference.
At £72.00, these are not cheap, but they do feel like a premium, more unusual player-style dart rather than a standard catalogue shape. You are getting a 90% tungsten barrel, a highly stylised design, a signature setup, plus a point protector and dart wallet in the box alongside the barrels, shafts and flights. If you like a dart with lots of personality, multiple grip options and a standout look, I think the Candy Man makes a lot of sense
