The Winmau Jack Johnson darts are one of those straightforward player darts that prove simple can still be really effective.
They are straight darts, they look like the sort of barrel where “nothing can go wrong”, and because they come from a young Team 360 player, there is a nice extra bit of interest there too. In the hand, this is very much a classic parallel barrel, but it is broken up sensibly so different players can find a reference point. Max described a smooth conical nose, then a light front ring section with shallow white grooves, followed by a smooth central area with the etched Winmau logo, then a deeper red ring section, and finally a narrower rear ring section before the stem.
The important thing with this dart is that it is not trying to be too clever. Max said it straight: this is ideal for beginners or players still working out exactly where they want to hold the dart. That makes sense, because the grip changes gently from front to middle to rear, rather than going from one extreme to another. Front grippers get some control at the front, mid grippers get a bit more bite from the wider red grooves, and rear grippers can work off the narrower rear rings. It is a very sensible player dart design.
On the board, the difference between myself and Max showed exactly what this kind of dart is about. I really struggled, but as I admitted in the review, that was much more about my own preferences than the dart itself — I need more grip and could not feel enough of it from where I was holding. Max, meanwhile, was on the rear section and got a much cleaner release, scoring a 140, a couple of tons, and looking much more comfortable overall. He ended up giving the barrel a 2 / 5 grip rating, which sounds about right: there is enough there to guide the dart, but it is not an aggressive or highly textured setup. That is actually what will make it useful for a lot of players.
At £30.00, these feel like really good value. Winmau’s own page frames them as a Team 360 signature dart built around performance and style, and that price backs that up nicely. For a 90% tungsten player dart with a very distinctive colourway, it looks like a cracking option for anyone who likes a dart with some proper feel to it.
