The Unicorn Jeffrey de Zwaan Maestro Phase 3 darts are one of those player sets that immediately look serious.
In the hand, I think these come across as a proper modern player dart with a lot going on across the barrel. Max talked through the setup in detail: the black coated point with spiral grooves, the brushed black ball nose, the front ring grip, the smooth logo section, then the deeper gold-toned rear grip sections with extra lateral milling. What stood out most to me is that this is not just a simple ring-grip player dart. It has a few different feels built into it, and that gives front, middle and rear grippers a few options depending on where they like to sit. Max also said the overall balance felt nice and that, although it was slightly thinner at the back than the front, he would still class it as a parallel dart.
On the board, these looked like a dart that would really suit players who want a lot of grip definition, especially towards the rear. Max said more than once that the section just behind the middle was very grippy, and that for a rear gripper who wants that sort of feel, these could be absolutely ideal. He personally had to adjust his grip a little because he was catching on the edge of the sharper section, but once he found the right hold he still got through the routine in eight darts and was happy enough with the release and the overall balance.
Grip-wise, Max gave them a very high 4.5 / 5, and that feels completely justified from the way he described them. He said the edges were quite sharp, and that the extra milling and lateral cuts added even more bite. That makes these a very clear fit for players who actively want a grippy dart rather than something smooth and forgiving. It is also worth noting that Max said the consistency of the grip should hold up well over time, which is a useful point if someone is after a barrel that keeps giving the same feel session after session.
Grip-wise, Max gave them a 2.5 / 5, which feels fair from the way he described them. He said the edges were not too sharp, there was no extra milling or aggressive coating adding bite, and that the grip felt more like a standard ring-grip style overall, just helped by the shape of the barrel. That is actually one of the strengths here. They are not trying to be an ultra-aggressive specialist dart. Instead, they sit in that useful middle ground where you get enough grip reference without it ever becoming awkward or snatchy on release.
At £79.95, these sit right in player-dart territory. Max said in the review that this felt about average for a player dart and I think that is fair. You are paying for a named-player model, a nicely detailed black-and-gold finish, and a barrel that has clearly been designed with a strong grip identity. If you like Jeffrey de Zwaan’s setup and you want a dart with a lot of bite at the rear, these make a lot of sense.
