The Unicorn Cameron Menzies Contender Phase 2 is one of those darts that proves simple can still be really effective. It’s just a clean-looking parallel player dart with a sensible grip layout and a shape that should work for a lot of players.
The barrel itself is very straightforward but in a good way. Up front there’s a volute silver point, which Max noted gave a little bit of grip going into the board even though he’d still prefer a coated point.
The front two-thirds of the dart is made up of a fairly standard ring grip that feels consistent without being too square or too sharp. At the back, the grip changes into a slightly more defined square-cut ring section with a blue inlay, which Max felt was a bit grippier than the front. Then you’ve got a smooth section with the etched Unicorn branding, Cameron Menzies’ name and the Scottish flag, followed by a few extra rear rings in case someone wants to throw from the very back. That mix is what makes it more versatile than it first appears.
At £56.95 for a branded Unicorn player dart in 90% tungsten, it sits in a really healthy part of the market.
